Begin gently and build up, was exercise advice 71 year old Sonney Albert
took seriously, when he first went to the Whakatu marae gym.
At the time Sonney had several health issues, including high blood
pressure, regular angina, and a pain relieving 'Tens' machine
permanently fixed to his back.
He also used a walking stick and was close to losing his legs because of ulcers.
After twelve months of gentle exercise classes at the gym, Sonney's health is greatly improved.
His blood pressure is normal, the Tens machine is gone, and he no longer relies on his angina spray or walking stick.
Kaiwhakapakari Tinana at the marae, Huriana Lawrence says a lot of
Sonney's success was due to meeting the gentle exercise group at set
times each week, and also the support and inspiration he gained from
others.
Sonney loves listening to stories from other exercise participants, and motivating people with his own story.
Now he's looking forward to building his physique further with an at home gym.
