Hi 5 to...Gertie
Age, location or lack of mobility isn’t going to stop Gertie Oxnam from keeping active. gertie.jpg

At an early age Gertie enjoyed sports - playing hockey, tennis, running sports, bowls and golf.

But at 91 she doesn’t get around as well as she used to, and now relies on her stroller.

Gertie was keen to join the senior ‘Sit and be Fit’ class in Murchison, so Way2Go coordinator, Berylla Jones arranged the class for a time that suited her and organised a ride to the venue, although Gertie has walked the half a kilometre from her home when no one picked her up!

Gertie gets great pleasure from her sit down exercise classes and says: “Please keep up the good work.”

Hi 5 to...Wendy

HI_5_Murchison_WendyWood.jpgRecovering from an accident or coping with a long-term condition can be tough when you have always been a very active person. Twelve years ago Wendy Wood was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and over the years her exercise options diminished.

"I went from being a tramper, fly fisherwoman, skier and diver to being unable to walk more than 200 metres and with poor balance," she says.

Wendy also suffered from lack of motivation, depression, poor sleeping patterns, and weight gain. However, with the support of Way2Go, Wendy now does Sit and Be Fit classes, and Pilates and Tai Chi once a week. She has changed her diet, lost weight and says there's an improvement in her MS symptoms.

Starting with a little exercise, and trying other activities as her fitness improved has been the key to Wendy's success.  Now she can walk 500 metres unaided and says fatigue is no longer a problem.

"Aqua aerobics is on my agenda for next summer," she says. " I'm motivated to get out and do things, my skin and eyes are clearer; if I was a dog I would have a wet nose!"

Hi 5 to...Tylor

Hip hop dancing gave year 9 student, Tylor McLeod, a real boost in self-confidence, and he's become a pretty good mover Tylor_McLeodsml.jpgtoo.

Because Tylors pretty good on the technical stuff, his teacher asked him to help with her dance classes after school.

He began helping to set up the sound system, and control the music when she was busy teaching.

It wasn't long before he was lending a hand with the younger group and their warm-up games.

Pretty soon he was having a go at some of the new moves the older group were learning, and before he knew it, Tylor was a fully-fledged dance student.

He listened carefully and worked hard during practices.

In Murchison Area School's 2009 concert, Tylor performed on stage with his dance crew for the first time, in front of 200 people, and did a brilliant job.
